About Us

We are an adult, mixed voice community choir in Shrewsbury.
We meet for rehearsals on a Tuesday evening at Fitz Village Hall (SY4 3AS) where we sing a variety of music ranging from classical to songs from the musicals.
Our concerts raise money for local charities.
Rehearsals are great fun with lots of singing and laughter.
We welcome new members, don’t worry if you’ve not sung in a choir before or can’t read music, you will get plenty of help.
So if you enjoy singing and having fun get in touch using the join us page!

Dr Motje Wolf, Musical Director / Conductor

Motje has been with The Yeoman Singers since September 2022 and is much loved by our choir members.

Motje Wolf is a German /British Mezzo-Soprano, Choral Conductor and Researcher.
She has been fascinated by working with choirs for most of her adult life, especially working on choir sound and enhancing repertoire. She was Director of Music at St Margaret’s Church Leicester and All Saints with Holy Trinity Loughborough and worked for Leicester Cathedral and Rutland Music Hub in their choral outreach projects in schools.
Here in Shropshire Motje enjoys working with us, The Yeoman Singers as well as the Shifnal Chorale and also offers workshops for schools and runs a vibrant Singing Studio focusing on individual voice training based in voice science.
Have a look at her website www.singingwiththewolf.com for more information.

As a former choral scholar and lay clerk of Leicester Cathedral Choir, she appeared on BBC Radio 4. She performed twice for Her Late Majesty The Queen and members of the Royal Family.
As a soloist Motje loves to perform 19th Century Art Song and Early Music with her Ensembles Fabula Musica (www.fabulamusica.com) and Anthology of Song (www.anthology of song.com).
Motje works as Senior Lecturer at De Montford University. Her research centres around voice pedagogy, choral pedagogy and making music with sounds. She co-founded a Special Focus Group on Singing in Music Education for the European Association of Music in Schools. Additionally she sits on the board of trustees for Sing Up Foundation and the editorial board of the international Journal of Research in Choral Singing.

Quite a pedigree I’m sure you will agree. We are very lucky to have her as our musical director / conductor.

Dr Derry Bertenshaw is our accompanist. He is a native of Shrewsbury, holds a First Class Honours Degree and PhD in music and is Organist and Choirmaster of St Giles’ Church Shrewsbury.

After some years involved in musicology Derry returned to his first love-composition. He has won several international composing competitions including the prestigious “New Music for St Paul’s” composing competition in 2019 whose judges included the Cathedral’s Director of Music Andrew Carwood MBE and the award winning British composer Cecilia McDowall.
